The Settle
Where to Buy Skincare Actives, Settled
By Pearl ·
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Here's how that works.
Every other “where should I buy this” question comes down to price or selection. Skincare actives are different, because the thing you actually need is permission to find out the product does not suit you.
You cannot learn whether a retinol or an acid works on your face without opening it and using it for several weeks. Which makes the return policy the entire decision, and it splits the market in a way almost nobody mentions.
The split that decides it
| Retailer | Opened and used returns |
|---|---|
| Sephora | Yes, gently used, 30 days, refunded to your card |
| Ulta | Yes, 30 days refund, then store credit to day 60 |
| Dermstore | No. Unopened, unused, original packaging |
| Lookfantastic | No. Unopened, seals intact |
| Credo | Varies by product, hygiene restrictions apply |
Sephora is explicit that returned opened products are destroyed rather than resold, which is worth knowing because it explains why the policy exists and why it is not abused lightly.
For a moisturizer you can predict, this gap barely matters. For a 2% acid or a first retinol, where the first month can genuinely look worse before it looks better, it is the difference between a $35 experiment and a $35 mistake.
The thing you should know about two of them
Dermstore and Lookfantastic are the same company. Both are owned by THG plc, which also owns Cult Beauty. So comparing them, or shopping around between them for a better deal, is less of a choice than the two websites suggest.
Dermstore’s history is worth a line too, because its reputation lags its ownership by about a decade. It was founded in 1999 by a dermatologist, which is where the clinical credibility comes from. Target bought it in 2013. THG bought it from Target in 2021. The derm-founded story is true and it is also two owners old.
One more disclosure worth making: THG owns beauty brands as well as the shops. Ameliorate, Biossance, Christophe Robin, ESPA, Grow Gorgeous and Perricone MD are all theirs. None of that makes those brands bad, and it is entirely normal retail practice. It does mean that when a house brand is prominently placed on a THG site, placement and ownership are not independent of each other.
Where each one is genuinely good
Dermstore has the deepest clinical range of the three, at over 750 brands and 26,000 products, including lines like SkinCeuticals, Obagi and Dermalogica that mainstream beauty retailers often do not carry. If you already know the specific clinical product you want, this is where it is.
Lookfantastic carries over 600 brands with free shipping and returns over $55, and runs a discount cadence that makes it the cheapest of the three often enough to be worth checking. Best for restocking, worst for experimenting.
Credo is the one to use if you want ingredients screened for you. Its Clean Standard rests on a published list of more than 2,700 restricted chemicals, which, as the clean beauty brief covers, is a genuine standard rather than a marketing word. You may not agree with every exclusion, but you can read it and check a product against it.
The settle
Buy your first bottle of anything new where you can return it opened. That means Sephora or Ulta. The premium you might pay over a discount site is smaller than the cost of one active that turns out to irritate your skin, and with actives that outcome is common enough to plan for.
Restock at whichever of the three is cheapest. Once you know a product works on your face, the return policy is irrelevant and you should simply pay the lowest price. That is what Lookfantastic and Dermstore are genuinely good for.
Use Credo when the screening is the point, not when the price is.
That ordering feels backwards for an article about three specialist retailers, and it is the honest answer. Their strength is depth and price, not risk. Risk is what a first purchase needs.
If you have not chosen the active yet, the acids brief narrows it, and the starter shortlist has the picks.
Frequently asked
- Can you return opened skincare?
- It depends entirely on the retailer. Sephora accepts new or gently used returns within 30 days refunded to your card, and Ulta refunds within 30 days then gives merchandise credit to day 60. Dermstore and Lookfantastic both require products to be unopened and unused.
- Are Dermstore and Lookfantastic the same company?
- Yes. Both are owned by THG plc, which also owns Cult Beauty. Dermstore was founded by a dermatologist in 1999, bought by Target in 2013, and sold to THG in 2021, so the dermatologist-founded reputation is accurate but two owners out of date.
- Where should I buy a first retinol?
- Somewhere that accepts opened returns, which in practice means Sephora or Ulta. A first retinol is the purchase most likely not to suit you, and the small premium over a discount retailer is cheaper than being stuck with a product that irritates your skin.
- Is Credo worth using over a bigger retailer?
- If you want ingredients screened for you, yes. Its Clean Standard is built on a published list of more than 2,700 restricted chemicals, which you can read and check products against. That is a real service and a different proposition from buying on price or range.
