The Brief
Gel vs. Regular Polish: What Actually Damages Nails

“Gel ruins your nails” is the most repeated claim in nail care, and it’s close enough to true that it’s worth taking apart properly. The damage is real. The cause is usually not the thing people blame.
The wear-time gap
Regular polish gives you two to seven days before chips show. Gel gives you ten to twenty-one, because it cures into a hard shell under a lamp instead of drying by evaporation. That’s the whole appeal, and it’s not a marketing number. Two weeks of unchipped nails is genuinely what gel does.
Everything else about gel follows from that hardness. It doesn’t wear away gradually the way regular polish does. It stays put until you take it off, which is exactly where the trouble starts.
Where the damage actually comes from
The nail plate is layered keratin. Gel bonds to the top layer, so when a lifted edge gets picked or peeled, it leaves with a sheet of your nail attached. That’s the thinning, the peeling, the tender white patches. It’s mechanical damage from removal, not chemistry from the polish.
Done properly, gel comes off without taking nail with it: file off the shiny top layer, then soak the color off with acetone rather than lifting it. The second real cost sits here too. Repeated acetone soaking dries out the nail and the skin around it, so back-to-back gel manicures with no gap leave nails brittle even when nobody picked at anything.
Regular polish avoids both problems. It comes off with a cotton pad in thirty seconds, which is why it stays the gentler choice for anyone whose nails already feel fragile.
So which one
If you want two weeks of finished nails and you’ll commit to proper removal, gel earns it. Olive & June’s at-home gel system is built around exactly that, removal caps included. If your nails are thin, or you repaint often because you like changing color, regular polish is the better tool and a treatment-forward brand does more for the nail underneath than any gel will.
One thing gel adds that has nothing to do with your nails: the lamp. Whether it needs sunscreen is a fair question with a real answer.
Frequently asked
- Does gel polish ruin your nails?
- The polish itself is not what causes the damage. Picking or peeling gel off takes a layer of nail with it, and frequent acetone soaking dries the nail plate. Removed correctly and with gaps between sets, gel is far gentler than its reputation.
- How long does gel polish last compared to regular?
- Gel runs ten to twenty-one days, regular polish two to seven. Gel cures hard under a lamp instead of drying by evaporation, so it does not wear away gradually.
- How do you remove gel polish without damaging nails?
- File off the shiny top coat, then soak the color with acetone using cotton and a wrap or silicone cap until it lifts on its own. If you are scraping hard, it is not ready. Never peel a lifted edge.
- Which is better for weak nails, gel or regular polish?
- Regular polish. It removes with a cotton pad and no acetone soak, so it avoids both damage mechanisms. A treatment-style polish adds conditioning ingredients on top of the color.
